Preparing for a bit of outdoors. One of the things that you will need to consider is shampoo. But the luxury of water in a faucet may be non existent in the outdoors. Time to make a plan.

Water may be limited or dirty or dangerous and adding extra weight in your backpack is not much fun either.

A dry hair cleaner is ideal for these types of trips.

Follow the simple recipe below so you don't need to look like a ragged coat of polar bear hair.

You also get to avoid potentially toxic chemicals that they put into shampoos these days.

It would not make sense to enjoy the pure and clean outdoors and then layer your scalp with synthetic cosmetic chemicals and wash it off into a clean stream.

Recipe 1 – Dry Shampoo or Rinse Free Shampoo

(Ideal for Camping or when Water is not Available)

Ingredients :

  • 125 ml cornstarch (you can also use arrowroot if you prefer)
  • Fragrance or Essential oil (optional)

Sprinkle cornstarch into your hair and massage into hair and scalp.

Allow it to absorb for a few minutes, then brush out with a hairbrush.

Repeat if necessary.

You can add a few drops (5 or so) of oil to the cornstarch to add a little scent.

You can use Tea Tree if you need some antiseptic properties in the oil.

Out of all the natural shampoo recipes, this one works very well when you need to make a plan.

What is arrowroot

Traditionally, arrowroot is the starch obtained from the rhizomes (rootstock) of Maranta arundinacea.

Other variations of arrowroot are :

  • Florida arrowroot from Zamia pumila
  • Tapioca from cassava (Manihot esculenta), which is often labelled as arrowroot
  • Japanese arrowroot from Pueraria lobata (called kudzu)

Some trivial information is that the name may have originated from the fact that arrowroot was used to treat wounds from poisoned arrows.

The arrowroot properties draws out the poison when applied to the wound.

Simplicity and sharing makes it fun

This camping shampoo recipe is really simple to make and easy to use. Most ingredients are available from local health shops. Occasionally, you may have to buy some ingredients on the internet.

If the ingredients are not available in your country, always check your local laws to make sure that you can import cosmetics into your country - some countries restrict the import of cosmetic ingredients.

These camping shampoo shampoo recipes are probably just the tip of the iceberg. There are probably many more favourites out there.

If you have one that you love and would like to share, we would all be very grateful and so would our community.

You can send one (or some) to us by using the form below.
